Research

Areas of expertise

My research interests are in the area of nutritional interventions that have the potential to promote health and prevent the onset of chronic disease. My lab specializes in designing and executing research (clinical, epidemiological, and systematic reviews) that are effective in informing policy decision making and communications. My team has conducted numerous state-of-the-art clinical trials that have enrolled as many as 1,200 participants for 6-months, analyzed data from numerous prospective cohorts, and authored many systematic reviews with dose-response meta-analyses and genome wide association studies (GWAS) . My CV and published works can be found here.

The Neurocognitive Effects of Choline

Our group was the first to show that 90% of Americans and 92% of pregnant women fall short of meeting dietary recommendations for choline. Since then, our team has worked to investigate how high maternal and early life choline intakes may affect the developing brain and how higher intakes across the lifespan may help prevent Alzheimer's disease.

Bone Health: Early Prevention of Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis and low-bone mass (commonly referred to as osteopenia) are a major public health threat to approximately 53.6 million Americans age 50 years and older. The prevalence of osteoporosis is higher among individuals with lower socio-economic status. Nutrition and other lifestyle exposures have the potential to influence bone health throughout the lifespan.

Defining the Human Requirement for Magnesium

Magnesium is important for many processes in the body, including regulating muscle and nerve function, blood sugar levels, and blood pressure and making protein, bone and DNA. A normal human adult body contains about 24 grams of magnesium and over half resides in in the bones.

The Saqmolo' Project

Approximately 150 million children—or roughly one-quarter of all the children in the world—are "stunted," or too short for their age. This has a detrimental impact on their cognitive development and ability to grow into functional adults. These children are more likely to have issues such as vocabulary deficits and deficiencies in school performance.

LGBTQ+ Nutrition

LGBTQ+ individuals have unique nutrition needs that may change throughout the process of social integration or physical transition.  Unique needs of individuals who are transgender have been increasingly recognized by professional nutrition organizations.

Bacteriophages – An Alternative to Antibiotics?

People taking antibiotics often develop resistance and experience gastrointestinal distress, since antibiotics kill both bad and good bacteria in the gut.  And by killing off all bacteria, antibiotics create a competitive environment for problem-causing strains like E. coli to grow and flourish.

Integrity Guidelines: To maintain transparency and to help minimize the potential for bias, my lab strictly adheres to the best practices for collaboratively working with various funders and stakeholders published by the American Society for Nutrition.  In accordance with these best practices, independence in the design, implementation, analysis, interpretation and reporting of all sponsored research must be granted by the funder and any other associated stakeholder(s).  All findings from research are to be published in a peer-reviewed journal, regardless of the outcome.  No contractual obligation shall preempt this policy.

ICMJE Disclosure of Interests:   I maintain full scientific independence on this website, in the media, and when conducting research.  PR agencies, media outlets, non-profit advocacy organizations, academic institutions, governments, and international regulatory bodies are held to the same integrity guidelines and standards as our industry partners. I pride myself in always disclosing potential conflicts of interest and In being fully transparent. All disclosures are listed here, per the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICJME) standards.
