Grey Hair Prevention Through Diet and Supplements

Written by
July 2, 2023

Grey hair develops as a natural part of the aging process. It occurs when the pigment-producing cells in the hair follicles called melanocytes gradually decrease in activity or stop producing melanin, the pigment responsible for hair color. This reduction in melanin production leads to the appearance of grey or white hair. While aging is the primary cause, other factors such as genetics, stress, and certain medical conditions may also contribute to its development. Certain lifestyle factors, including diet and supplements, may influence its onset and progression of grey hair. In this blog post, we will explore scientific research and discuss dietary strategies that may help prevent premature greying of hair.

Dietary Strategies for Preventing Grey Hair

Consuming a diet rich in antioxidants may help reduce oxidative stress, which has been linked to premature hair greying. Include a variety of antioxidant-rich foods such as berries, leafy greens, citrus fruits, and colorful vegetables in your diet. These foods are packed with vitamins A, C, and E, as well as minerals like zinc and copper that support hair health. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fatty fish (e.g., salmon, mackerel) and plant-based sources like flaxseeds and chia seeds, have anti-inflammatory properties and may also contribute to overall hair health. Including these sources of omega-3s in your diet can help maintain hair color and prevent premature greying.

Supplements for Grey Hair

Biotin, a B-vitamin, plays a role in hair health and may help prevent premature greying. Foods rich in biotin include eggs, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and leafy greens. However, it’s important to note that biotin deficiency is rare in individuals with a balanced diet, and excessive supplementation should be avoided.

Catalase is an enzyme that helps break down hydrogen peroxide, a compound that can contribute to hair greying. Some studies suggest that catalase supplementation may help prevent or delay grey hair. However, more research is needed to fully understand its effectiveness.

Para-Aminobenzoic Acid (PABA), a compound found in foods like liver, whole grains, and mushrooms, has been linked to hair color preservation. It is believed to support the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for hair color. While PABA supplementation is available, further research is required to establish its efficacy in preventing grey hair.

Vitamin B12 deficiency has been associated with premature greying. Ensuring adequate intake of vitamin B12 through diet or supplementation may help maintain normal hair pigmentation. Good dietary sources of vitamin B12 include animal products such as meat, fish, eggs, and dairy. Vegetarians and vegans should consider B12 supplementation or fortified foods.

The Bottom Line

While genetics primarily determine hair color and the onset of greying, incorporating a balanced diet rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and nutrients like biotin and vitamin B12 can support hair health. Supplements like catalase, PABA, and vitamin B12 may also show promise in preventing premature greying, although further research is needed. As always, consult with a certified registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) before initiating any new supplements or making significant dietary changes.
